There has been a lot of talk recently about the possible end of tipping at restaurants. However, friends Andrew Hales and Stuart Edge had a different idea, and it’s a heartwarming one: get to know their servers, learn their stories, tip them $200 in cash, film the reactions. Though some may say it’s a selfish grab at internet stardom under the guise of kindness, it’s hard not to get a warm feeling inside seeing people react to such an act. Watch for yourself and you be the judge.

Bringing Farm-to-Table to the iPhone

Naithan Jones set out to create an app – and not just one that flings birds at pigs for fun. His app, AgLocal, aims to create a direct link between organic, sustainable meat farmers and restaurants, retailers and consumers. The app’s slogan, “Buy and sell responsibly-raised meat. Simply.” speaks to a growing connection between conscious consumers and food producers and the shrinking barriers to a more transparent food system.

Chef Cooks With Bionic Hand

As a chef, one’s hands are one’s livelihood. After an accident left chef Eduardo Garcia without his left hand, the situation might have ended his career at any other point in history. However, thanks to Portland-based Advanced Arm Dynamics, the Montana chef has been outfitted with a high-functioning bionic hand capable of gripping in 25 different positions. While Chef Garcia may not be as efficient as he was before, the opportunity for him to continue his career after such a tragedy is truly a remarkable achievement.
